Domaines Lupier is a project started in 2006 by Elisa Ucar and Enrique Basarte. Both Elisa and Enrique have years of experience in the world of wine but they wanted to start an interesting project of their own. Spain is renowned for the world’s largest number of old vine Garnacha but this number is, sadly, decreasing thanks to EU grub up schemes and producers’ reluctance to care for these old, gnarly beauties. The search for old vines took the couple to Navarra where they set about acquiring and rescuing 27 small parcels (17ha) of 6 – 109 year old Garnacha vines, some of which were abandoned.
Upon acquiring these small plots, Elisa and Enrique decided to take the biodynamic approach to viticulture from day one and looked to improve the health of the vines by using only natural and sustainable practices and giving each individual plot the unique attention that it needs. They want to express the terroir of Navarra and achieve a balance within the vines which can be mirrored in the wines produced. Domaines Lupier is currently working towards biodynamic certification.
In the winery, the lunar cycle is observed for most functions including racking. The wines are aged in large oak vats ranging from 300 litres to 1500 litres and sulphur is kept to the minimum.
2008 was the first commercial vintage of the two wines, El Terroir and La Dama, and these deeply coloured wines were an instant success due to their crystalline acidity, complex mineral profile and concentrated core of fruits. A pure expression of old vine Garnacha and a mission accomplished.
