Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes

About the producer

Louis-Claude Desvignes describe themselves as being just like the stones of their soil: "robust, worn out and exhilarated by the weather", remaining consistent and true to tradition, but constantly evolving. They are producers of some of the finest Morgons in the appellation. Their vineyards are situated on the Montagne de Py in the centre of Morgon, where the fruit is of far superior quality to that produced in the outlying areas of the appellation. There are also several plots located on the best exposition of the hill, with soils of decomposed schist.
Seventh generation vigneron Louis-Claude handed over the day-to-day running of the property to his charming daughter Claude Emmanuelle in 2001. In 2004, she was joined by her brother, Louis-Benoît, who is mainly in charge of looking after the vines. The vineyards are divided into six south and south-east facing climates. From east to west follow one another; Grand Cras, Les Charmes, the famous Côte du Py , Corcelette, Micouds, and Douby. The soils that make up their terroir are friable crystalline rocks, rich in iron oxide and crossed by veins of manganese, schists and very old volcanic rocks.
They harvest later than other vignerons in the appellation to obtain fruit of optimal ripeness. The wines are vinified in the traditional cru Beaujolais method with a grille to keep the cap submerged. Recently, the fermentation has been longer and more controlled than in the past, in order to extract more colour and depth of fruit - the hallmark of their wines.
