Domaine Lucas & André Rieffel

MITTELBERGHEIM

Background

Domaine Rieffel owns 10 ha of vineyards around Alsace, including holdings in three Grand Cru vineyards – Kirchberg in Barr, Zotzenberg (chalk and limestone) in Mittlebergheim and Wiebelsberg (sandy soil) in Andlau. Zotzenberg is the only Grand Cru vineyard where Sylvaner is allowed to be planted and Lucas has a small holding of old Sylvaner here. Riesling forms 35% of his vineyard holdings.

Only three people work at the winery Lucas included, therefore he tries to make life easier for himself where he can. Lucas prefers selection massale for any new plantings and has a ‘mother vine’ Riesling that he uses for cuttings when replacing old vines. Pruning is done very early, in December, on flat vineyards again as a result of being a small team. No leaf plucking is employed in the vineyard.

40% of his production is exported, the rest is sold domestically, with a large portion being sold locally in Alsace. The Rieffel wines are certified organic as of the 2012 vintage. Although Lucas would like to experiment with biodynamics, it is very time consuming and he does not have the necessary man power to do it. Lucas moved to screw cap in 2008 for all non-Grand Cru wines, this allows him to use less SO2 before bottling.
