2020 Vintage Update

Well what an interesting start to the season it has been, though I could say that about every season.

Spring was lovely and settled, very unusual for Marlborough as the wind is usually a feature. We thought summer had come early with hot temperatures in November, gearing up for a cracking summer we had a rude awakening in December, cool temperatures and significant rain, most of it in two dumps, with one of those lasting four days. Worries about a poor flowering due to the rain and December temperatures have been unfounded with a fantastic fruit set in the bunches. The rain, while annoying, has been very welcome setting up the soil moisture for the rest of the season.

January, much like 2019 has been very dry and hot for Marlborough, tempering the berry size for added concentration and low disease potential. A cool change for the start of February has been welcome, allowing the vines to rest and relax as they head into véraison.

Bunch thinning has almost been completed, with controlled cropping being a hallmark of Dog Point, this is an important part of the year where attention to detail is of the utmost. I think we are in for a (another) special vintage.
